TROPICAL Reinsurance Company managing director Ushe Mungaraza was elected as the new president of the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (IIZ), taking over from Edward Gomba, who served the institution for two terms.
He is deputised by Mapiyo Chigorondondo as first vice-president and Reuben Java as the second vice-president.
In his acceptance speech, Mungaraza pledged his commitment to continue exploring means and ways of uplifting the position and standards of the institute.
“The president (Gomba) highlighted in his report a number of initiatives that are ongoing which I commit with the new board to see that we see them through, chief among them, we were told that the curriculum has been approved by the Ministry (of Higher and Tertiary Education). We will ensure that that project will be implemented,” he said.
“I think key for the institute, we have been told in the past few years to actually develop the institute into a full-fledged college of insurance. That process has begun in earnest and we will see to it that in the coming year we will do all that is necessary to ensure that project gets value.
“I’m also interested in developing our foreign markets. We are already in Botswana, Mozambique and Lesotho. I think we will do more as the board.”
Mungaraza said the hardships currently faced by the entire economy should not slow their goal for the skills development of the industry.
“Our skills are our lifeline,” he said.
The out-going president said during his term of office, the institute acquired a property for college development. He said the institution will this year expand its operations in countries such as Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia.
“The new board will carry on with the development of the new market,” Gomba said in his report.
The conference ran under the theme Visualise, Exceed, Explore. – Newsday
