Over 120 golfers from different firms took a day off from their busy Friday schedules to tee off, have a nice walk on the green and network with colleagues in support of the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (IIZ) annual corporate golf day, at Chapman Golf Club, in Harare.
IIZ is a not for profit organisation and depends on the subscriptions of its members for sustainability. The annual golf day is an initiative by IIZ to raise funds to finance research and development and on-going projects.
“The tournament has been there for quite a long time, I think now stretching over 10 years, it is meant to support the cause of the institute, so that the institute will be able to fund on-going projects,” said IIZ General Manager, Mr George Chikava.
“For example we are presently developing our curriculum upgrading it to international standards, so it requires funding for reading material, and the payment of the course development,” he added.
The IIZ General Manager said that this year’s golf tournament was well supported and that the institute would continue to provide high quality training programmes.
“The tournament has been well supported by the industry, because we had about 30 teams, with about 120 participants. It’s a good field for a golf tournament and we did get a lot of sponsorship, it’s going to the good cause of supporting the institute,”
IIZ is a professional insurance organisation and an independent examining body serving people working in and affiliated to the insurance industry. The Institute also facilitates short courses, workshops, seminars, and conferences as part of continuing professional development (CPD) to the industry in general.
Speaking at the Golf Tournament players in the industry emphasized the critical role the Institute plays in promoting efficiency and improving business practices in the insurance industry.
“That is why we sponsored the event and golfers came in their numbers to support the golf day,” said the General Manger of Minerva Insurance Brokers, one of the sponsors of the golf Tournament Mr Solomon Mavuka.
“IIZ is the knowledge Bank of the industry, we sponsored the golf tournament to support it to produce the required skills in the market,” he added.
His sentiments were reiterated by the Public Relations Manager of Doves, Nerina Mahachi, who said that IIZ was equipping players in the industry with skills to operate effectively.
“We are here in support of IIZ because it is a key stakeholder in terms of equipping players in the risk and insurance industry with skills that are necessary to operate in the market effectively,” said Nerina.
Speaking to Risk Insure Zimbabwe, The CEO of Moonlight Funeral, Dr Chomi Makina said that the golf day was also a networking event, and a platform to share ideas.
“The local golf day is very important, because we meet with other members of the insurance fraternity and we exchange notes, and discuss about what is happening in the industry and things like that. So it’s very crucial for us as moonlight to make sure that we support this event on an annual basis,” stated Dr Makina.
Since 2015, stakeholders outside the insurance industry have come in support of the tournament, this year companies like Grand Auto Body Shop, Speciss College, OK Zimbabwe, Deposit Protection Corporation, Golden Pilsner and the City of Harare supported the event.
Chester Murasiki General Manager Grand Auto Body Shop said that the event offered institutions such as them who might not be in the insurance industry but provide services to the industry a chance to interact with their colleagues in a relaxed environment.
“This is a lovely tournament I think we are having a nice walk in the park. We are here because we are in the panel beating industry so these are my colleagues we share mutual partners. We also offer low cost but high quality alternatives in the market, that have endeared us with a lot of players in the insurance industry,” said Chester Murasiki.
The event was sponsored by Grand Reinsurance, First Mutual Life, Fidelity Life, Eagle Insurance Company, Deposit Protection Corporation, Marsh, Minerva Insurance Brokers, Ruvimbo Funeral Assurance, and Golden Pilsner.
The Managing Director of Platinum Sponsor, Grand Reinsurance Mr Tatenda Katoma said that Grand Re was proud to be the Institute’s partner and in the work the insutitute was doing in terms of human capital development.
“Grand Re takes pride in partnering IIZ to develop future skills for the industry. The success of Grand Re is anchored on continuous human development and we have made a deliberate decision to ensure that we actively participate in nurturing future talent for the industry at large.
The IIZ President, Dr Edward Gomba was grateful to the sponsors and participants that came in their numbers to support the institute and making the event possible.
